Patience in a world of chaos

Have you ever found yourself feeling like you’re getting nowhere fast? Welcome to the party! It’s about as common a feeling as any. Especially in todays world of instant gratification.

Progress Over Perfection

One of the main issues I run into myself is competing interests between progress and perfection. It’s natural to want to create the best content, regardless what medium you work in. However, this natural desire for perfection shouldn’t inhibit you from creating often. I’m going to share a few tips I’ve picked up along the way to help make continued progress.

Opportunity Calls

Who needs a parachute?

I’m writing on patience today because it’s something I often struggle with in my own creative career. Developing a unique skill set often takes longer than many think. It’s also plagued with a variety of unknowns that tend to hold up your natural desire to develop quickly.

When these hold ups happen, it’s really easy to stall your progress by creating excuses why something can’t be done. The picture above is an amazing opportunity I was offered. I got to shoot video from a plane of another formation flight. I almost convinced myself I didn’t belong on that plane because I didn’t have pro gear and was just starting out as a videographer.

Thankfully I said yes to the opportunity and am very grateful I did. I may not have gotten the best footage, but I learned a lot and did get a shot that I was really proud of. It sure is a lot of fun hanging out of a plane with no door and no parachute.

Simple Sells

Below are a few points to consider when you find yourself feeling stuck.

• Think about what you have, not what you need!

This sounds easier than it is. I can’t tell you how many times I would create scenarios where I could’t do something because I was convinced I needed a piece of gear or <insert your excuse here>. The reality is, once you start focusing on what you have you realize just how much potential there is.

• A 70% solution now is better than a 100% solution when we’re all dead!

A bit morbid, but that’s a saying that was engrained in me during my time in the military. This is the idea that if you are always trying to develop 100% solutions eventually it will be too late to execute that plan. While you’re planning and plotting your adversary is making moves and gaining ground. Stop stalling and start executing! You’ll be surprised how far a 70% solution will get you.

• Breathe Often

Yep, that simple. Remember to breathe! It’s easy to get caught up in all the chaos. If you’re an entrepreneur you know how difficult it can be juggling so many tasks and trying to maintain focus. There are so many distractions these days it’s amazing anyone gets anything done. Remembering to breathe is a great way to ground yourself in the present.
